Finnish vowel lengths

Finnish vowels are either short or long1; if the length of a short (or single) vowel is n, the length of a long (or double) vowel is n x 2. For example, the letter a in the word appelsiini (English: orange) is pronounced /ɑ/, and the double a in aamu (English: morning) is pronounced /ɑː/. This distinction between short and long sounds is important; it can change the meaning of a word entirely.
